The Thuya tree (pronounced Two-ya) is indigenous to Morocco. It is one of the few trees that can regrow after being cut down to the trunk which contributes to its sustainability. It is grown exclusively in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, primarily near the seaside town of Essaouira. Fathers often pass the skill of working with the wood down to their sons. Each piece must be polished with a blend of lemon and oils in a process that often takes as long as the construction. Polishing your thuya wood at least once a year with a bit of olive oil and a soft cloth is recommended.
